Richard M. Sherman, renowned for his contributions to film music, particularly for classics such as “Mary Poppins,” passed away at the age of 95 on Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gluck, and their children, Gregory, Victoria, and Lynda.
A funeral service is scheduled for May 31 at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California.
Together with his brother Robert B. Sherman, Richard received numerous prestigious awards, including two Academy Awards and three Grammy Awards. Disney CEO Bob Iger remarked, “Richard Sherman was the embodiment of what it means to be a Disney Legend.”
Pete Docter from Pixar commended Sherman’s “infectious joy for life,” while film historian Leonard Maltin emphasized the optimistic spirit of the Sherman brothers, stating, “Their music had an upbeat outlook that spilled over into Richard’s life.”
Sherman’s professional achievements encompassed musical scores for notable films such as “Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book,” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” In recognition of their contributions, the Sherman brothers were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and honored as Disney Legends in 1990.
