Student loan cancellation has been the only question whirling in the minds of students since Joe Biden promised to forgive $10,000 per borrower. Biden has been actively stating how he has a systematic solution in mind to cancel off student loans. Hence, he is yet to offer a potent proposal.
Joe Biden could definitely influence the higher authority, i.e Congress, to pass a bill that cancels off student loans. The government has been talking about amends and dropped down many hints but a legal procedure is yet to be announced.
Biden’s Perspective
The White House has certainly extended the zero-interest pause on loan payments that began under Donald Trump’s reign. The federal student loan is now scheduled to end on 31st August. Although more extension on the given date is anticipated.
An abundance of borrowers hasn’t made a single payment in the last two years. However, as soon as the payments resume, most student loan acquirers will start paying their monthly agreed payments. Perhaps until a miracle arrives.
Loan Forgiveness?
The loan cancellation programs are undoubtedly up and running. The Department of Education has laid out an estimation that $32 billion in loans has already been canceled for around 1.6 million borrowers. This estimation begins from the tenure of Joe Biden up until now.
The White House also announced another program on the 18th of August that potentially aids more than 7 million borrowers who have defaulted on their student loans. Such activities surely bring some serious consequences. For example, long-lasting impacts on credit and seizure of tax returns.
The program which goes by the name of “Fresh Start” potentially offers a rehabilitation process for borrowers. All default penalties will be removed imminently. The rehabilitation process for people who would like to take a new start and go further with a payment plan will be made easier.
Biden’s Stance On Loan Cancellation
Joe Biden is expected to make an impactful decision regarding the student loan cancellation program by the end of 31st August. Apparently, Biden himself imposed this deadline. Although, Congress is trying to convince Biden to cancel $50,000 off each borrower.
But Mr. President has rather made his stance clear that if he uses the authority that has been bestowed upon him, it wouldn’t go a penny further than $10,000 on each borrower.
I am considering dealing with some debt reduction; I am not considering $50,000 in debt reduction. But I’m in the process of taking a hard look of whether or not there will be additional debt forgiveness, and I’ll have an answer on that in the next couple of weeks.
Biden stated at a news conference on April 28th.
However, the borrowers must bear in mind that not all of the loan they took is going to get canceled. There’s no such thing as a formal announcement or proposal as of yet regarding which loans will be canceled.
